Internship Opportunities Available

South Central Regional Library Council is pleased to announce the following internship opportunities for students enrolled in an MLIS/MLS program. Feel free to redistribute this posting to other lists.

Digitization Internship Opportunity:

A150-hourunpaid internship opportunity for an MLIS/MLS student interested in gaining experience in the area of digitization. The internship is available for the spring term.  Under the supervision of the Manager of Digital Service and Resource Sharing the intern will create digital collections. Training will be provided.  Activities may include:

  • Assisting  in the selection of materials to digitize.
  • Developing metadata templates and subject vocabulary in conjunction with teachers and school librarians.
  • Working with CONTENTdm.
  • Training and/or overseeing the scanning of documents.
  • Developing and carrying out an outreach strategy to Social Studies teachers and school librarians.
  • Developing evaluation tools.
  • Project evaluation.
  • Web development.                                                                                                              

The intern will ideally have had some course work or experience with digitization (or be currently enrolled in related coursework) and be able to work independently and as a team; good attention to detail is essential.

General Internship Opportunity:

150-hour  unpaid internship opportunity for an MLIS/MLS student interested in gaining experience in the multi-type library environment. Potential projects include:

  • Creating program-related LibGuides.
  • Preparing a report outlining trends specific to the 14 counties in SCRLC’s service area, i.e., how local socio-economic trends and literacy impact library services (the new census figures come out 1 Feb (useful to long-range planning).
  • Participating in a  general multitype experience—engage in activities in several programs and activities (administrative, continuing education, resource sharing, marketing, and others).  
  • Propose your own multi-type library project!

Information about the South Central Regional Library Council (SCRLC):

The South Central Regional Library Council (SCRLC) (www.scrlc.org) is one of nine Reference and Research Library Resources Councils comprising the NY 3Rs Association in New York State. As a multi-type library consortium, SCRLC serves approximately 70 members across 10,000 square miles in the counties of Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, and Yates. SCRLC provides programs and services to 20 academic, 23 hospital, and 23 corporate and non-profit libraries, as well as 3 public library systems, and 6 school library systems and their members. SCRLC reaches over 500 libraries in its service area.


SCRLC was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1967 and functions under state law and the State Education Department. Funding  sources include the State of New York, grants, and membership dues and fees. SCRLC is governed by a representative Board of Trustees elected by the membership. In this collaborative environment, SCRLC staff and Board are assisted in needs assessment, planning, and implementation of programs and services by advisory committees and task forces. SCRLC members actively participate in the Council's programs and benefit from services and grant programs.

The SCRLC membership is strengthened by the diversity of resources, expertise, ideas, and perspective of its multi-type membership, bringing together library interests across library type. SCRLC is the means through which its diverse membership coordinates, networks, learns, advocates, discovers, and builds on their commonalities. Together, members can achieve a level of service for their users that would be impossible to do alone or as any one type of library. Multi-type library organizations like SCRLC strengthen library services, programs, and access to information for the benefit of all library users, the region, and society as a whole. Multi-type library organizations ensure everyone's success.

Our Programs and Services

SCRLC's programs and services enhance and facilitate member library cooperation, service delivery, resource sharing, and advocacy. SCRLC helps members with planning, grant opportunities, and challenges related to their library services and programs, conducting focus groups, providing discussion lists, and organizing special interest groups to enhance and improve library service.
